What is PTE?
Pearson Test of English Academic, PTE Academic, is a computer-based English language test that measures and validates the proficiency levels of the English language of the non-native English speakers who enter the English-speaking academic world. PTE Academic assesses all four language skills-listening, reading, speaking, and writing. This test is accepted by thousands of universities worldwide, including prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, INSEAD, and Yale. PTE Academic is also accepted for visa purposes by the Australian and New Zealand governments.
PTE Academic test is endorsed by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the same organization responsible for the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), and is delivered worldwide through Pearson VUE centers.
TEST STRUCTURE
PTE Academic consists of three main parts:
- Part 1-Speaking and Writing
- Part 2- Reading
- Part 3- Listening

There is also an optional 10-minute break after the reading section.
There are twenty different question types, each assessing one language skill or a combination of language skills. Most of the items (question types) assess more than one skill. The table below shows the skills assessed in each item.
SCORING
Test scores are aligned to the widely acclaimed set of levels defined in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), consisting of a numeric scale that ranges from 10 to 90 points, thus gauging an English language proficiency more accurately. All items in PTE Academic are machine scored. PTE Academic score is valid for two years.
Types Of Scoring
There are two types of scoring: Correct or Incorrect and Partial Credit
Correct or Incorrect
For items that fall in this category, you will receive maximum score points if your response is correct. If your response is incorrect, you will receive no score points.
Partial Credit
For items that fall in this category, your response is scored as correct, partially correct, or incorrect. If your response is correct, then you will receive maximum score points. If your response is partially correct, you will receive score points, which is less than the maximum score points. If your response is incorrect, you receive no score points.

**For these item types in PTE Academic, points are deducted for wrong answers. This deduction is NOT applicable to any other items.
Types of Scores
PTE Academic reports three score: Overall score, Communicative skills scores, and Enabling skills scores
Overall Score
The overall score is calculated based on the performance of all the test items. This score ranges from 10 to 90 points.
Communicative Skills Scores
Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking are the Communicative skills measured on the PTE Academic. If an item assesses more than one skill, then the score of this item contributes to the score for each of the communicative skills. For example, if an item assesses both listening and speaking skills, then the score of this item contribute to the score for listening skill and for speaking skill. Each Communicative skills score ranges from 10 to 90 points.
Enabling Skills Scores
Grammars, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written discourse are the enabling skills measured on the PTE Academic. Items that assess enabling skills contribute to the enabling skills scores. The score range of each enabling skill is 10 to 90 points.
Test Fees

A late booking fee is incurred if a booking is made 48 hours or less before a test.

Requirements to take the PTE Academic
Students must be at least 18 years or older to appear for the test, or he/she must produce a consent letter from their parents or guardian in order to attempt the test if the age is below 18 years.
How To Register For The Test
- Visit pearsonpte.com/book-now/ and Create an account
- Fill in the necessary details ( Ensure that the First Name and last name match with the details given in the passport*)
- Within two business days, you receive an email with your login details
- To schedule an appointment, visit pearsonvue.com/pte and login to your account
- Select ‘Schedule this exam’
- Search for the test center near you and choose from the available times
- Make a payment, using credit card or debit card
- You will receive a confirmation email with all the necessary details

To take the exam, you have to provide a Valid Passport, which is not expired.
